“The story of this film is unusual.
Four novels framed by prologue and epilogue, unified in conception and spirit, creating its entity.
Different in content.
Different in location.
Different in landscape, people, customs.
Opposite on rhythm and form, they create a vaste and multicoloured Film-Symphony about Mexico.”
Que Viva Mexico!, Eisenstein
“The greatest and most many-side intellect to have devoted himself to the cinema in the half-century of its history to date, is unquestionably the Russian director, S M Eisenstein. Que Viva México!, had been allowed to complete it, might have been his greatest work. All that remains of it is a formidable quantity of uncut film of superb photographic quality and a few sketchy drafts of what he intended to fashion out of it, of which the following script is the most complete. The rest has died forever with Eisenstein, one of the sad, stillborn masterpieces of the world.”
